Picture of a recorderEach year, our third graders learn about instruments during music class.  As part of their studies, they start playing the recorder to practice reading music and using proper rhythm.  The children spend a lot of time at home in preparation for class, where they can perform a variety of songs, from easier to harder.  For each song the children complete, they are rewarded with a specially colored string to signify their achievement.  When completed, the final song earns the child a black string, or their "black belt".

Citizenship

In 1987, James Dunham retired from Charlton Heights as Principal.  In his honor, a citizenship award was created and was given to five students in the school.  In 1988, it was decided to honor fifth grade students at the Holiday Concert.  The last award was given in 1990 as it was determined to be extremely difficult to choose award winners from so many worthy candidates.
