EXCEL Renovation Projects

If the EXCEL Renovations Proposition is approved by the voters on March 1, the Board of Education plans to use that money for the following 12 projects.

Note:  these costs are estimates. Actual costs would be determined by seeking bids from contractors, but in no case can the Board of Education exceed the $4,940,778 once it is authorized by the voters.

1. Replace roofing on High School music and technology wing $379,000
2. Replace roofing on High School library & some 2nd floor classrooms $460,278
3. Replace roofing on Middle School locker rooms & adjoining corridor $228,000
4. Replace roofing on Charlton Heights cafeteria, gym & 1 classroom wing $648,000
5. Replace roofing on Pashley B and C quads   $351,000
6. Replace roofing on Stevens gym $199,000
7. Repair Stevens rear roof coping covers & cornice $45,000
8. Repair Stevens front roof coping covers, cornice & top of parapet $157,500
9. Replace the High School pool filters to operate correctly and much more efficiently with the school's new (2006) heating system  $127,000
10. Replace Pashley’s antiquated steam heating system with a much more energy-efficient hot water system $1,966,000
11. Upgrade Stevens electrical capacity as has been done at other schools $264,000
12. Replace Stevens original, now corroded galvanized piping   $116,000
Total $4,940,778

An important feature of projects 1 - 6 is that the Board of Education intends to purchase 30-year-waranteed roofing, which is now available, instead of the 20-year roofing that has been used in the past. Given the ongoing significant expense that the district faces in keeping its 11 total acres of roofing in good shape, school board members agreed that 30-year materials are the better investment.

The school district's architect estimates that 30-year-warranteed materials will cost 17% more than 20-year materials for these six projects, but will increase the useful life of the roofs by 50%.
