BH-BL 2010-11 Budget

2010 Legislative Task Force

GOALS:

  •  To influence state legislation that could impact our schools and community by actively involving more BH-BL residents in the lobbying process.

  •  To connect local residents with state lawmakers in more tangible, visible and meaningful ways.

  •  To help residents understand the role the state plays in school budgets and in local Board of Education decision making.

MEMBERS: Volunteers are being solicited from the community and staff to participate in this new initiative. The task force is open to all staff, residents and high school students who wish to participate, but the ideal member is a registered voter and a district resident. In other words, the ideal person is someone who can say to a legislator “I’m a BH-BL resident and I vote.”
Once a position paper and talking points have been developed, task force members will be given support to start lobbying legislators. They can select activities they are comfortable with, such as:

  •  Making phone calls to legislators.

  •  Sending real letters or faxes to legislators – not emails!

  •  Joining district officials in visits to legislators.

  •  Attending rallies as a group (such as the Capital Area Public School Board Association breakfast in Albany).

PROCESS: Interested persons are asked to:

1. Give us your name and contact information, including email address & phone, so we know how to reach you. (Please email this to Communications Specialist Christy Multer.)
2.

Attend an introductory task force meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 9, in the high school library from 6:30 – 7:30 pm (immediately before the regular Board of Education meeting). This get-acquainted session will cover how we envision the task force working and information on state issues impacting BH-BL this year.

3. Attend the three Budget Forums on Feb. 2, March 2 and March 25, if you can, so you can learn about this year’s challenges and how BH-BL is responding.
4.

Sign up to receive “Budget Development Announcement” School News Notifier alerts, if you wish, to automatically receive email updates about budget activities and meetings. You can get more information here or click directly on the SNN logo, above right.
