BURNT HILLS: On February 2nd, 150 Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake parents, staff, retirees and volunteers from across the community gathered for the annual Founder Day dinner at River Stone Manor in Scotia.

The evening was a surprise-filled celebration of the stories of some amazing parents and/or staff from each school, people who had been nominated and selected to recognize their years of service and their notable dedication "above and beyond" the usual to the needs of local students and families.

Eleven men and women received Founders' Day Awards, which includes an honorary lifetime membership to the PTA:

For Charlton Heights Elementary PTA Teacher Traci Hall & parent Sharan Zarnofsky
For Pashley Elementary PTA Parent Terri Jo Kislowski & teacher Aimee Miller
For Stevens Elementary PTA Librarian Alison Cuyler & parent Sonja Olson
For the O'Rourke Middle School PTA Secretary Nancy Harrigan & parent Laura Foster
For the BH-BL High School PTA Assistant principal Tim Brunson & principal Maryellen Symer
For PTA Council Parent Jodi Cataldo

Additionally, PTA Council president Mary Carrier presented superintendent Jim Schultz with a Distinguished Service Award. Mr. Schultz had received a PTA Founders Day award in 1997, and is now preparing to retire in June after 41 years with BH-BL.

A celebration of district culture and values

Here is a sampling of statements from the speeches made either by the award winners or about the award winners:

"Every day I wake up and I'm thankful for the great place that I teach."

"She is someone who quietly works in the background making sure that everything gets done."

"I love the kids, I love the community, and I love the people that I work with. I kind of came here by accident, but it was the best accident that ever happened to me."

"I don't want to ever ask someone to do something that I'm not willing to do myself. So I just go with the flow and try to make the world a better place."

"He not only attends school events, he becomes part of the events."

"You are the quintessential giver and the embodiment of the Founder's Day spirit."

"From the elementary school to the high school, we have good kids and that makes my job and everyone's job here so meaningful."
