The weather was perfect, spirits were high, and hundreds of cameras recorded the moment as families celebrated the successes of their sons and daughters.

Below are some images from the day.

In her remarks to the graduates and assembled guests, Principal Maryellen Symer attempted to describe the breadth of class members' accomplishments as follows:

photo of graduates"Your class includes a national Intel Science competition semifinalist, a GE Star Scholar, a National Council of Teachers of English award winner, Commended Merit Scholarship recipients, a Merit Special Scholarship Finalist, a New York State Gatorade Volleyball Player of the Year, a pitcher selected in the major league baseball draft, a student recognized as a 13 Kids Who Care, and numerous community and college scholarship recipients whose awards total $2,737,235 over the course of your college years.

Your performances of Rumors, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, and the student production of Hayfever displayed the dramatic talents of members of the class, and audiences left the auditorium smiling having enjoyed an evening of dramatic comedy.

photo of graduatesThe concert band, symphony orchestra, jazz band, concert and select choirs traveled to Orlando, Florida, and competed with over 40 groups from around the country and Canada.  Our high school performing groups secured top honors in all categories.

For the first time in school history, our Science Bowl team took first place at Regionals and competed at the national level in Washington, DC.  Your athletic accomplishments spanned a variety of sports and seasons.  The girls cross country team and the boys’ senior eight crew boat were state champions, our ski team boasted the girl’s giant slalom state champion, the boys’ soccer and girls’ volleyball teams were state finalists, the girls’ soccer team was state semi-finalists, boys’ volleyball reached the highest possible honor in their sport, regional champions, and girls’ tennis also reached the highest possible honor in their sport, sectional champions."

Graduates received their diplomas from Board of Education member Nancy Della Pia (center) and congratulations from Superintendent Jim Schultz (left).

photo of graduate with dollar bill  It is a school tradition that each graduate hands a one dollar bill to the superintendent after receiving his or her diploma. This always results in the problem of where to carry one's dollar contribution while waiting in line, plus some bulging pockets in the superintendent's suit coat.

At the end of the diploma distribution, class president Karl Gerner announced the class had decided to donate this year's contributions to the American Cancer Society. He also received loud cheers and applause when he concluded that "Every last member of the Class of 2008 has made me proud to say that I am a Spartan!"
