Activities & Clubs for Middle School
Most of the student clubs and activities below meet during Activity Period after school on Tuesday, Wednesday, and /or Thursday. There is a second condensed bus run home on these three days after Activity Period so that students can enjoy the wide range of activities offered at the O'Rourke Middle School. For more information on any of the activities below, contact the advisor listed.

Art Club:  Mrs. DiCristofaro, Mrs. Flint & Mrs. McDonnell - Meets all year in the advisors' Art Room to complete art projects.  Open to 6th, 7th &  8th.

Book Club:  Mrs. LaRosa - Participants get together once a week for discussions on books of common interest.   Open to 7th & 8th.

6th Grade Book Club:  Mrs. Mattison

Participants get together once a month for discussions on books of common interest.  

Chamber Strings Club:  Mrs. Walker - Meets Tuesdays, September - December in room 132 for enjoyment and skill development.  Open to 6th, 7th & 8th

Chess Club:  Mr. Barton  - Meets once a week from November through May.  Meetings will be announced and will take place in Room 134.  Open to 6, 7 & 8.

Computer Club:  Mr. Lancaster -  Meets twice a month.  The focus is on elementary programming languages and their applications to real world problems.  Open to 7th & 8th graders.

Drama Club:  Mrs. Rayome and a Cast of Thousands meets November - March to prepare and present the school musical.  Open to 7th & 8th.

French Club:  Mrs. Kirkwood - Meets once a month in room 227 for French cultural activities.  Open to 6th, 7th & 8th.

German Club:  Mr. Van Gelder - Meets once a month in room 105 for German cultural activities.  Open to 6th, 7th & 8th.

Go Green Club:  Mrs. Ruder and Mrs. DiCristofaro - Students work on recycling within the building.

Literary Arts Journal:  Mrs. LaRosa & Mrs. Berner  -
Meets in the spring in room 225 to publish student art and writing in journal format. Open to 6th, 7th & 8th.

Math Club:  Ms. Gestwick - Math Club meets once a week beginning in November.  We are aligned with “MathCounts,” which is a national program and competition.  We use MathCounts problems and activities as the basis of the club meetings.  If the club generates a team of 4 or more students, we will sign up and compete in the local competition at the GE Research and Development Center in Niskayuna.  The competition is usually held the first or second Saturday of February.  Our team needs to be decided by December 1.    6,7 & 8

Middle School Jazz Ensemble:  Mr. Tetlak - Meets on Tuesdays all year in room 130.  Jazz band for selected 7th & 8th grade students only. Inquiries should be made of Mr. Tetlak.

National Junior Honor Society:  Mrs. Hills Meets all year in the school library. A community service organization for 8th graders meeting eligibility criteria. For more information about the NJHS, click here. Service Record Form in printable format.  Open to 8th.

Newspaper Club:  Mrs. Wadsworth -

Odyssey of the Mind: PTA - Students work with coaches to compete in the Odyssey of the Mind competitions.

Science Club:  Mrs. Ruder & Mrs. DiCristofaro - Meeting dates to be announced. Students explore a variety of math, science and technology competitions and projects. Open to 6th, 7th & 8th

Spanish Club:  Mrs. Mahoney - Spanish Club meets throughout the year to celebrate cultural holidays and to create crafts. Meetings are in Room 207 and will be announced.  Open to 6th, 7th & 8th.

Student Council:  Mrs. Sprenger - Meets all year in room 123.  School student government organization.  Open to 6th, 7th & 8th.

Sunshine Club:   Mrs. Wadsworth and Mrs. Bitley Clark - The Sunshine Club will provided opportunities for students to reach out to other students in a time of need.  The club will meet  once a month and members will write cards, letters and notes of encouragement to other students who might need "a bit of sunshine" in their lives. 

Yearbook:  Ms. Zyskowski - Meets all year in room 104 to publish the school's yearbook, for selected 8th graders only.

XPE Club:  Mr. Leggieri  - Extreme Physical Education Club meets twice a month to take "gym" to the next level.  For students who excel and are positive leaders in their regular PE class.  Open to 8th.
