Colleen Kane, Principal

It is hard to believe that we are approaching the end of the school year! We still have plenty to do, though, with some exciting special events coming up, including class trips, concerts, and Spartan Games, as well as our usual daily business of learning!

On May 25th, our 8th grade students participate in the highly competitive Spartan Games Day. Eighth grade homerooms compete against each other in contests of skill and nerve like the perennial favorite, balloon toss, and the challenging tug of war! Organized by our PE teachers, Karen Layton, Gary Bynon and Geoff Leggieri, this is always an exciting day for the 8th grade class

We will take time during the week of June 21st to learn about Lyme Disease and raise some money to support Lyme Disease Awareness and Prevention.

Class field trips are coming up with the 6th grade class going to Camp Chingachgook on Monday, May 21st, and 8th grade going to the Great Escape on June 8th.  It’s “May Madness” on May 18th for the 7th grade class. Seventh grade students will have a variety of activities to choose from during the morning of this half day of school. These events require a great deal of organization and our teaching staff pitches in to provide these special times of learning and fun for our students.

Our incoming 6th grade students from Pashley, Stevens and Charlton Heights will visit the Middle School at the end of May. They will go on a tour and meet some of our staff to help begin the process of transitioning. Fifth grade students are also invited to an Intro to REC Night on Friday, June 1 from 7 - 9 PM at the Middle School.

Our end of year concerts include:
> Thursday, May 17 - 7:30 Pm at the HS - Band 7, Chorus 7 and MS Jazz Ensemble
> Thursday, May 31 - 7:30 PM at the HS - Band 6, Chorus 6 and Orchestra 6
> Wednesday, June 7 - 7:30 Pm at the HS - Orchestra 7/8, Band 8, Chorus 8

Sixth grade has its final Spirit Day on June 4th. This program is a reward and incentive program organized by the 6th grade teachers, offering a variety of activities for students to choose from, such as basket weaving, candy making, ice skating, and bowling.

We are already planning the events for 8th Grade Class Night, which will take place on Friday, June 15, 2012.  The Celebration and Awards Ceremony is at 6 PM in the High School gymnasium, followed by the Class Night Dance at the Middle School, which ends at 10:00 PM.  Please see the attached letter for more information.

As you can see, we have a lot to do!! Eighth grade students still have the New York State Science testing and our final exams begin on June 15 through June 21 (schedule on O’Rourke’s main page)  Final exam days are half days, ending with dismissal at 10:30 AM.. Please note that students with siblings graduating on June 21 at SPAC will be able to leave their exam as soon as they have finished and go to the main office to call home to be picked up in time to make the graduation ceremony. Also, the 6th grade has their last exam on  Wednesday, June 20.  There is no school for grade 6 on Thursday, June 21.
