eBooks at Speck


Speck Media Center offers digital content in a variety of formats:

Borrowing eBooks - These eBooks and audiobooks follow a lending model like any other library book - they are borrowed by one user at a time, and you can read or listen on your digital device.

Online eBooks - These eBooks are online 24/7, and can be viewed from any Internet-ready device. Passwords are available in the Speck Library Media Center.

eReaders - We have NOOKs available for loan that are pre-loaded with award-winning novels.

Borrowing eBooks

These eBooks and audiobooks follow a traditional lending model -
one user can borrow a title at a time, for a two-week loan.
You can read or listen right in your browser,
or download it to your device
to read/listen without Internet connectivity.

Our Digital Libraries

     You can borrow from two digital libraries  (eBook collections):
1. BH-BL eBooks: a growing collection of ebooks, just for BH-BL students, and
2. BOCES eBooks
: a large collection, shared with all Capital District students.

Sign in to Browse and Borrow

    Signing in to our Digital Libraries is easy!  There are links to our BH-BL and BOCES collections on the library homepage, and below.

1. BH-BL eBooks

    To sign in: your username is made up of your first initial, last name, and two-digit graduation year, i.e. dsmith24.  Your password is your Student ID number.

    To sign in: first, select our school district from the drop-down menu.  Next, type in your OverDrive Library card number, which is your Student ID number.

How Do I Borrow an eBook?

     It's easy!  Go to one of our Digital Library links, enter your student information, and you're ready to borrow.

     When you check out an ebook or audiobook, you can read or listen right in your browser (Chrome, Safari, or Firefox).

     With OverDrive, you can download ebooks and audiobooks right to your device, and read or listen anywhere, without access to the Internet.

What is OverDrive?

     OverDrive is a free software (app) that allows you to enjoy ebooks and audiobooks on a computer or mobile device.  If you download the app to your own device, you can read/listen without being connected to the Internet. Refer to the next section on Downloading the OverDrive App.

      If you'd like to download an ebook or audiobook to your personal device, you'll need the OverDrive app.  The OverDrive app is available for every major desktop and mobile platform.  Visit your device's app store, or click on this link to find the version for your operating system:

     We have three NOOK eReaders available for borrowing.  Before borrowing one of our NOOKs, a student must return a NOOK User Agreement signed by a parent or guardian.  Copies of the user agreement are available at the circulation desk in the Speck Library Media Center.
