students working at a lab with water

Students explore properties of water, make salt trees

Did you know that some of our first-grade students recently became scientists?

For several weeks in December, students explored the incredible properties of water by first learning about lab safety then donning some rubber aprons & goggles before jumping right into their experiment to create Salt Trees.

With help from PACE Coordinator Carrie Sunkes and K-12 Science Supervisor Dave Collins, the students mixed brine and constructed cardboard trees. In their "Science Lab Notebooks" they drew pictures and wrote their predictions about what the Salt Trees would look like. This hands-on lesson kept the kids engaged and entertained, incorporated science with ELA, art and math, and helped kids hone their fine-motor and problem-solving skills
