Confirmed Case of COVID-19 within Y-Care Program at Pashley Elementary School

Late last evening, Nov. 15, BH-BL school officials learned that a staff member/volunteer within the Y-Care Program held at Pashley Elementary School has been confirmed positive for COVID-19.

Y-Care Program Coordinators worked closely with officials from the Schenectady County Department of Health (DOH) to help them identify individuals who may have been in close contact with the confirmed staff member. Parents have also been notified by Y-Care staff if their child(ren) need to be quarantined. DOH Contract Tracing staff will follow up directly with parents within the next 24 to 48 hours to review the details of mandatory quarantine. In the meantime, parents may also contact Schenectady County DOH through its COVID-19 hotline at (518) 386-2824.

Please know, per our health and safety protocols, the building is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected every evening both through surface sanitizing wipe downs and a disinfecting fogger. Details about our cleaning procedures can be found on our website, bhbl.org. Additionally, based on the DOH’s investigation, it is not being recommended that we close the building or suspend the Y-Care Program at this time. Therefore, our school will remain open for in-person instruction and we will continue to run the after-school program.

We cannot emphasize enough that we must all remain vigilant and follow the guidelines outside of school, this includes limiting group gatherings, practicing good hygiene, wearing masks and following social distance guidelines.

This notification is part of our commitment to keep you informed during these uncertain times. However, please know that the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and other privacy laws restrict district officials from disclosing or confirming any personally identifiable information. Therefore, we cannot identify by name anyone who has tested positive. The individual member who tested positive is in quarantine for the recommended time and will not return to the program until cleared by the Department of Health. We will continue to work closely with our local Departments of Health and we will follow their guidance on how to maintain a safe and healthy learning environment.

Please continue to conduct at-home screenings and maintain personal awareness of COVID symptoms. Visit our website or contact your child’s school principal directly if you would like more information about our health and safety procedures.
