On Sunday, May 5, BH-BL students, Elizabeth (Stevens Elementary School), Emmy (Pashley Elementary School) and Caroline (Stevens Elementary School), spent the morning reading their winning creative writing pieces at the Open Door Bookstore on Jay Street in Schenectady.

The bookstore holds an annual children’s creative writing contest then selects winners to share their work publicly. This year’s contest was titled “When I Woke Up This Morning, I Was a … !”  and contestants’ stories must begin with that sentence starter. After that, they can let their creative juices flow.

“A what?” the contest rules ask. A monster? A superhero? A kickboxing grandma? Dream up your character and make your story as wild or funny or crazy as you want.

A winning writer from each grade level (1-8) was recognized and received a gift certificate for The Open Door Bookstore at Sunday’s celebration party. Nice work, Spartans!
