Letter From Principal Re: Chromebook Use at Home

Dear Parents/Guardians,

I want to provide you with additional information regarding how our district is responding to the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) situation.

Remember that the Staff Development Day originally scheduled for Friday, March 20 has been switched to Monday, March 16. Students will not attend school on Monday, March 16, and regular classes will take place on Friday, March 20.

To date, we have no confirmed cases of coronavirus in BH-BL. However, given the circumstances, we know there is the possibility that school could be closed for an extended period of time at the direction of the Department of Health. If school is closed for an extended period of time, we will provide academic resources and activities for students. Many teachers may have included materials and activities in their students’ backpacks today. Elementary report cards are being sent home with students today.

We have also decided to send our grade 3-5 students’ Chromebooks and charging cables home today. We are confident that our students will take good care of the Chromebooks.  We typically offer an inexpensive insurance program in case of accidental damage, however, during the current COVID-19 situation we are waiving the cost of the take-home insurance for 3rd 4th and 5th graders. The computers will be fully covered in case of accidental damage. Our Chromebooks are filtered directly through the school district’s content filter and using the computer at home is exactly the same as using it in school. We also encourage you to read through our Responsible Use of Technology document.

Please have students bring their Chromebook back to school on Tuesday, March 17.  Further guidance will be provided regarding how students can use the Chromebook to stay connected with school in the event of an extended closing. If your child was not in school today, we will provide information on how the Chromebook can be picked up in the event of an extended closing.

It is important for parents to talk about this situation with their children, as it could be a confusing or scary time for them. Here is a resource to assist you in speaking with your child about the virus: Talking to Kids About the Coronavirus.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership.
