Khan Academy

A collection of resources that offers academic practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that allows learners to personalize their studying in and outside of the classroom. The following subjects are available: math, science, computing, history, art history, economics, and more including K-12 test prep content. There are millions of students who use this site everyday.

How do I start?

  • Click sign up on Khan Academy’s home page
  • Join as a learner and continue through Google (being logged into your BHBL account)
  • Click 6th grade, 7th grade or 8th grade
  • Example: Under math choose “6th, 7th or 8th grade” and “Arithmetic” and under Reading and Language Arts choose “6th, 7th or 8th grade reading and vocabulary” and “Grammar”

What resources are available?

  • Math: Ratios, Rates, and Percentages | Arithmetic Operations | Negative Numbers | Properties of Numbers | Variables & Expressions | Equations & Inequalities Introduction | Geometry

Ted Ed

Many have heard of the famous Ted Talks, but now Ted is reaching out to the youth of society through this educational web page. Their goal is to spark and celebrate the ideas and creativity of students as well as teachers around the world. They provide a variety of features from having a growing library of original animated videos, to providing an international platform for teachers to create their own interactive lessons, to helping curious students around the globe bring their education to the classroom.

How do I start?

  • Click register in the top right corner and sign in using a NON BHBL account email
  • Create a password and put in your first and last name
  • Choose student and choose the following subjects: “Literature and Language”, “Social Studies”, “Mathematics”, and “Science and Technology”
  • Go into your settings and choose “Middle School/Lower Secondary” as your grade level

A trusted learning website resource supporting core and supplemental subjects. The tools available include, learning games, activities, and there well known animated movies featuring Tim and Moby. Covers universal topics and languages such as English, Mandarin, French, and Spanish. An important BrainPOP and BrainPOP ELL with the resources for the following subjects: Science, Technology, Math, Engineering, Social Studies, Reading/Writing, Health, Arts, English, Music, Vocabulary, and Grammar specific content as well.

How do I start?

  • Use log in username: orourkems

  • Choose a topic and have fun!

  1. Choose which topic you would like to learn about within each unit
  2. Watch the short video with Tim and Moby
  3. Check for understanding:
    • Take the quiz
    • Make a map

    • Graphic Organizer
    • Test your vocabulary
    • Play games


Duolingo (Spanish, French, German, Chinese)

Fun, game-like lessons that keep students motivated and excited about language.  Studies from the City University of New York and others have shown how well it works.

How do I start?

  1. Click on “student”
  2. It will then ask you if you want to join a classroom; click on “not now”
  3. You will then be asked if you want to start at an “Intro level” or “Placement test”.  You can do either one or both.  The placement test will help determine which level the site will start you at with their resources.
