The NYS Department of Health’s Interim Guidance for Child Care, Day Camp, and Overnight Camp Programs during the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency has now been revised to apply to summer school programming as well. BH-BL programs will follow the new guidance effective immediately. The guidance states:
- Unvaccinated children/campers are strongly encouraged but not required to wear face coverings indoors as feasible, especially when social distancing cannot be maintained.
- Face coverings must be worn during transportation by individuals who are not fully vaccinated.
- Unvaccinated staff must wear a face covering at all times while indoors.
- Face covering requirements do not apply to those who are fully vaccinated.
This unifies the guidance for all of our summer schools as well as the Summer Rec program at Charlton Heights and all summer sports and STEM camps. The Schenectady County Department of Health reviewed the state guidance and asked us to remind parents that “while this new policy does give flexibility on mask wearing, we want to make it clear that we at Schenectady County Public Health Services strongly encourage the continued usage of masks for unvaccinated children while indoors.” They reminded us that not wearing a mask indoors increases the risk of mandatory quarantine for unvaccinated individuals, should a student in a classroom test positive.
DOH also said that daily reporting to the COVID-19 Report Card is no longer required. We are also not requiring the daily screening, as we did during the school year. However, it is very important that students and staff with any COVID, cold, or flu-like symptoms of illness stay home for the day.
