Instrumental Music Program Information

One of the most exciting milestones for our elementary students is the opportunity to learn a band or orchestra instrument. Playing an instrument not only fosters creativity and teamwork, but it also builds lifelong skills, creates lasting memories, and allows students to become a part of BH-BL’s proud, award-winning musical tradition!

In Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake, our formal instrumental music program officially begins in the fourth grade, and the journey to get there starts in the spring of third grade.

How to Register (For Current 3rd Grade Families)

To keep our process simple and streamlined, all registration materials are handled digitally.

  • What to look for: In May, parents of all third-grade students should keep a close eye on their email inbox for a special correspondence from the Director of Fine Arts.
  • What’s included: This email will contain everything you need to get started, including instrument exploration details, informational videos, and the digital registration form to sign your child up for fourth-grade lessons.

Helpful Information for Families

While you await the May registration email, here are a few general things to keep in mind as you prepare for your child to join the program:

  • Instrument Selection: During their third-grade year, students get to see and hear live demonstrations of the various band and orchestra instruments to help them discover what they are most passionate about playing.
  • Lesson Schedule: Once fourth grade begins in September, students receive weekly small-group lessons. These 30-minute lessons are scheduled on a rotating basis during the school day so that students do not miss the same classroom academic period each week.
  • Instruments & Supplies: Complete details regarding instrument rentals, required lesson materials, and rental options will be outlined clearly in the enrollment information.
