Sexual Abuse Prevention Curriculum

Kindergarten

Day 1: Self Esteem

  • Increase self-esteem
  • Develop self-awareness and self-identity
  • Have positive feelings about themselves and other children in the class
  • Provide trusted adults with identifying information

Day 2: Buddy System

  • Understand how and when to use the BUDDY SYSTEM

Day 3: Check First

  • Know how to use CHECK FIRST before going anywhere, before accepting anything from anyone, and before changing plans

Day 4: No-Go-Tell

  • Understand that they are special and that their bodies are special
  • Recognize inappropriate (NOT OK) touches
  • Understand that it’s OK to say “No” to an inappropriate touch, and that they can ask for help

Day 5: Trusted Adults

  • Identify people they can talk to and who are ready to help
  • Know that s/he is not alone
  • Understand the Safety Rule:  NO-GO-TELL
  • Demonstrate how to respond to inappropriate touching of personal parts of the body and to the unsolicited attention of someone older by using the NO-GO-TELL rule
  • Have the confidence to use the rule if necessary

Grade 1

Day 1: Emergency Situations

  • Access help with the phone

Day 2:  Buddy System

  • Review the Buddy System discussed in Kindergarten
  • Learn how to apply it to protect themselves in everyday situations
  • Use the Buddy System so that they are safer and less vulnerable
  • Know how to be safe in situations away from home in surroundings which are not always familiar
  • Demonstrate safe procedures to use in a store setting

Day 3:  Secrets

  • Be aware that they do not always have to keep secrets
  • Differentiate between acceptable secrets and secrets that should be told
  • Know that they can ask an adult for assistance
  • Know they are not alone
  • Review of sexual abuse prevention skills
  • Know that there are many people who can help them
  • Express and visualize that there are many people who can provide them with help for problems which are too big for them to handle alone

Day 4: Check First, NO-GO-TELL

  • Use the CHECK FIRST and NO-GO-TELL safety strategies as part of everyday behavior
  • Identify situations when adult permission or advice is needed
  • Know how to respond in a variety of situations

Day 5:  I Can Play It Safe

  • Read/Review ways to stay safe
  • Read the book I Can Play it Safe

Grade 2

Day 1: No Go Tell

  • Discuss and practice assertive behaviors which will be helpful when dealing with bullies or other individuals who might be bothering them
  • Identify and rehearse strategies that increase their safety when they are in an unfamiliar setting

Day 2: Trusted Adults

  • Know that there are many people in their lives to whom they can talk if they have a problem that is too big for them to handle alone

Day 3: My Body Is Private

  • Distinguish between appropriate touches (O.K. TOUCHES) and inappropriate touches (NOT O.K. TOUCHES)
  • Recognize personal parts of the body
  • Identify secrets that should be told

Day 4: Buddy System, Check First & Emergencies

  • Explain when it is appropriate to CHECK FIRST and use the BUDDY SYSTEM
  • Explain why it is important to practice these safety skills
  • Know how to access emergency help when it is needed

Grade 3

Day 1: Emergency Situations

  • Access help when out of their area
  • Recite their full 11-digit telephone number for out-of-state calls

Day 2: Safety First

  • Children will remain safe from abuse and exploitation
  • Identify situations when safety is more important than good manners

Day 3: NO-GO-TELL

  • Understand that the NO-GO-TELL rule is used to thwart victimization attempts
  • Be familiar with common tricks used by perpetrators.
  • Know how to recognize and respond to inner warning feelings.
  • Know how to use assertive self-protection actions in a variety of situations.
  • Know that they may turn to a trusted adult for help.
  • Recognize the qualities which the adult demonstrated to show that they were a trusted helper.

Day 4: Protecting My Body

  • Understand they are in charge of their own bodies.
  • Discriminate between good touch, confusing touch, and bad touch.
  • Identify situations of possible sexual abuse and state rules of personal safety.

Grade 4

Day 1: What is Decision Making?

  • Identify personal health decisions and influences
  • Recognize personal capabilities and limitations as they relate to possible healthy solutions

Day 2: Substance Abuse

  • Compare information on tobacco, alcohol and marijuana, and describe/explain their roles as Gateway Drugs

Day 3: HIV / AIDS (lasting 1 to 2 lessons)

  • Describe the differences between HIV and AIDS, how it is transmitted, and how it is not transmitted

Day 4: Sexual Abuse Prevention “Tricks”

  • Describe the “tricks” used to lure young people into dangerous situations and identify categories of common “tricks”

Day 5: Sexual Abuse Prevention “Good Touch, Bad Touch”

  • Discriminate between “good” touch, “confusing” touch and “bad” touch.
  • Identify situations of possible sexual abuse and state rules of personal safety

Day 6: The Decision Making Process

  • Apply the IDEAL Decision Making model to real-life situations

Day 7: Perceptions / Responsibility

  • Questions perceptions of normative health behavior
  • Describes how personal health decisions are connected to subsequent decisions
  • Assumes responsibility for personal health decisions

Grade 5

Day 1: Different Types of Touch

  • Recognize, refuse and report abusive situations
  • Discriminate among the different types of “touch”
  • Identify steps they can take to protect themselves when they feel taken advantage of
  • List resources available to them for acquiring needed help

Day 2: Perpetrator Tricks & Safety Rules

  • Recognize common “tricks” and lures used by perpetrators
  • Realize that the Safety Rules (they learned before 5th grade) still work
