Earlier this week, the rhythm of Afro-Caribbean and Latino music filled the high school auditorium as students from both O’Rourke Middle School and BH-BL High School who take Spanish courses, along with high school music students, gathered for a special performance by the renowned Alex Torres & His Latin Band.
For more than two decades, Alex Torres and his ensemble have dedicated themselves to educational outreach, visiting schools to share the rich history of Afro-Caribbean and Latino roots and rhythms. The performance went beyond an entertaining and culturally rich concert; students were able to take a deep dive into the unique instruments that define the genre. In fact, they were invited to step out of the audience and onto the stage to pick up instruments and join the professional musicians, becoming part of the band for a truly immersive musical experience.
Celebrating the talent and culture of the ensemble is just one of the many events that students participate in as part of the World Languages and music curriculum.
“It was a day of cultural appreciation, musical discovery, and Spartan pride that will surely resonate with the students for years to come,” says World Language teacher Amber Shanholtz.
The performance held a special local connection as well, featuring Tyler Giroux, a proud BH-BL Alumnus who now performs with the band!
