BH-BL HS Graduation Requirements

To graduate from BH-BL High School, students must fulfill course, credit, and examination requirements as explained below. In keeping with state and district standards, the high school offers three possible diplomas.
Unless otherwise noted in the course listings that follow, a year-long course is equal to one credit toward graduation and a semester course earns one-half credit.   NYSED – Understanding Diploma Requirements

Course & Credit Requirements

Students must earn the following credits in order to graduate with one of the three possible diplomas.

Regents Diploma* (22 credits)

  • English, 4
  • Social Studies, 4
  • Math, 3
  • Science, 3
  • The Arts, 1
  • Health, 0.5
  • Physical Education, 2
  • World Language*, 1
  • Electives, 3.5

Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation (22 credits)

  • English, 4
  • Social Studies, 4
  • Math, 3
  • Science, 3
  • The Arts, 1
  • Health, 0.5
  • Physical Education, 2
  • World Language**, 3
  • Electives, 1.5

Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation and BH-BL Merit Seal (26 credits)

  • English, 4
  • Social Studies, 4
  • Math, 4
  • Science, 4
  • The Arts, 1
  • Health, 0.5
  • Physical Education, 2
  • World Language, 3
  • Life Skills°, 1
  • Electives, 2.5

° Life Skills courses are those in technology, family and consumer sciences, business education, computer education, or fine arts classes beyond the one unit of the Arts required for graduation.

Examination Requirements

Students must earn a minimum grade on the following Regents Exams
(appeals, exemptions and/or special appeals may apply per NYSED):

Regents Diploma*

Regents exam with a grade of 65% or higher in:

One English
One Social Studies
One Math
One Science
One additional exam with a score of 65% or higher in:

  • Social Studies Regents (Humanities Pathway); or
  • Math Regents (STEM Math Pathway); or
  • Science Regents (STEM Science Pathway); or
  • World Language Level 3 exam (LOTE Pathway); or
  • Career & Technical Education Program + NYS approved assessment (CTE Pathway); or
  • Career Development & Occupational Studies – 216 CTE hours + 54 internship hours + Employability Profile (CDOS Pathway)

Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation,
Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation and BH-BL Merit Seal

Regents exams with a grade of 65% or higher in:

One English
One Social Studies
Three Math
Two Science
World Language Level 3 Final Exam**
One additional exam with a score of 65% or higher in:

  • Social Studies Regents (Humanities Pathway); or
  • Math Regents (STEM Math Pathway); or
  • Science Regents (STEM Science Pathway); or
  • World Language Level 3 exam (LOTE Pathway); or
  • Career & Technical Education Program + NYS approved assessment (CTE Pathway); or

Notes

* Students with an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) are eligible to receive a Local Diploma if they earn a grade of 55% or higher on the required Regents exams OR if they successfully complete the NYS compensatory safety net option.  They may also be exempt from the one year LOTE requirement if it is indicated on their IEP. Students should see their special education teacher or counselor for detailed information regarding this option.

** A student who completes a five-unit sequence in Business, Technology, Family & Consumer Science, Career & Technical Education,  or The Arts may earn a Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation and be exempt from the world language requirement. Students replacing 3 years of language with this sequence can not earn the BHBL Merit Seal.
