Interscholastic Coaching Core Values

  1. We are part of the education of each child. Academics, citizenship, teamwork, and being a participating community member are always valued and taught first in our respective athletic arenas.  We will teach our student-athletes to be good teammates, to be coachable, to show gratitude and to demonstrate respect towards opposing teams and coaches.
  2. We are all Spartans. We are all here for each other – coaches and student-athletes from all teams should support their fellow Spartans with words and actions.  Veteran coaches should seek out new coaches to pass down the core values of our culture.  New coaches should look to learn about our culture and how to implement it into their respective programs. All coaches should promote multisport athletes participating in school-based athletics.
  3. We work with parents. Coaches should take a proactive approach when working with parents.  Not only do we train student-athletes, but we need to discuss and work with parents on how to deal with decisions that don’t go their way.  Also, we understand and know that family comes first but commitment to team is a big lesson to our student-athletes.  Our coaches must understand how important the delivering of the message of this commitment is to student-athletes and parents.  When and if issues arise, proper channels of communication should always be used.  Player-coach followed by parent-coach, if needed.  Player-coach communication is a valuable lifetime skill for each student-athlete to acquire.
  4. We prepare and expect continual growth.
    1. For Athletes: We have practices that are learning-filled: Student-athletes are not ridiculed and embarrassed in front of their teammates. A level of physical fitness is expected.  Coaches have practice plans with specific goals.
    2. As Coaches: BH-BL is committed to supporting learning opportunities and professional development for our coaches. Such opportunities will include in-house coach to coach dialogue, sport specific clinics, conferences and in-house professional development that will include veteran coaches from our staff leading meaningful discussion.
  5. We are leaders of leaders. Our student-athletes are taught leadership in a detailed, thoughtful manner.  Student-athletes chosen to lead teams will work with their coaching staff to garner the necessary words and actions to effectively help lead their teams, including public relations and interviews with local media.
  6. We are supporters of teachers and administration. School guidelines, specifically the Athletic Code of Conduct, will be reviewed with teams at the beginning of the season to outline expectations. Team and school rules are discussed and expectations are consistent.  Coaches will look forward to working with all staff across the school community.
  7. We are role models. We emphasize the importance of respect and discipline from our athletes so it’s our responsibility to show that respect when instructing, disciplining or providing feedback. In addition, demonstrating appropriate sportsmanship towards officials, opponents and parents is an expectation for coaches and enforced with the athletes.
  8. We are supported. BH-BL coaches and district leaders understand and support the fact that a coach’s role includes stretching student-athletes and teams out of their comfort zone in a suitable and age-appropriate manner.  Outside of comfort zones is where true growth occurs; both in the physical and mental realms.
  9. We build futures. Coaches are responsible for assisting in the recruitment of our student-athletes to intercollegiate athletics. We are here to assist in the communication between the college coach, parent and student-athlete throughout much of the process.  Working with our guidance department, we are here to assist the student-athlete in finding a college that will meet their athletic and academic goals.
  10. We preserve our culture. Spartans always lean towards respect, grit, and passion. We want to be the standard for other athletic programs.
