HS students win 1st place at Junior Achievement Stock Market Challenge

students grouped together on a simulated stock trading floor holding a first place certificate

High school students in Jennifer Wheeler’s Investing 101 class have spent the past several weeks learning about the Stock Market, investment sectors, mutual funds, bonds, compound interest, futures and options, cryptocurrency, and the regulatory environment. Today, they took their newfound skills and put them to the test at the Junior Achievement Stock Market Challenge where they won first place.

More 400 students from 11 different schools competed in the challenge held  SUNY Albany in the SEFCU Arena. The arena is transformed for the day into a high-energy simulated trading floor environment allowing students to buy and sell stocks and other securities using fake money based on real-time market data. The students were grouped into four-person teams and each team started with a million dollars. They have 60-minutes to invest and trade to see who makes the most money on the simulated stock market. Each minute is equal to one day on the market.

As with most games, the team with the most money is the winner! Congratulations to BH-BL’s four-person team of Cole Bechtel, Caiden Desrosiers, Azya Dolloff , and John Zepf (pictured with Mrs. Wheeler and Superintendent Dr. Patrick McGrath).
