BH-BL High School junior Jewelia Berggren tries her hand at laying bricks  at the Capital Region BOCES Career and Technical Education (CTE) Center.

Berggren, who attends BOCES from BH-BL HS, is enrolled in the Welding and Metal Fabrication program. She and about 1,000 other CTE students took part in a Careers in Construction Month event that allowed students to try their hands at various other trades and learn about a host of careers in the industry.

Berggren is following her father into the trades and chose a BOCES program to help make that happen.

“The people at BOCES are really nice and the teachers are excellent, Berggren said. “They explain things in a way that is easy to understand.

The Oct. 22 Careers in Construction Month event saw more than 30 area business, labor and government organizations – including the Bricklayers & Allied Craftworkers Local No. 2 New York/Vermont – take part in demonstration and network with students.

October is National Careers in Construction Month. Through the month, Capital Region BOCES—in conjunction with its business and higher education partners— is highlighting the programs it offers that help build the workforce of tomorrow, as well as the opportunities that exist for workers in those industries.
